Stones (1952-1956)

Fontana called “Stones” the fragments of glass paste that he affixed directly to the canvas. The surface of the canvas was covered with oil or, exceptionally, aniline color, which was spread by thick backgrounds traversed by constellations of holes. The stones affixed to the pierced surface create an additional implied spatial dimension: they protrude by opposing the breakthrough caused by the holes and open up new avenues of imagination.
