HISTORY AND MISSION

The Fondazione Lucio Fontana was established by Teresita Rasini Fontana on November 29, 1982. It was then granted the status of a non-profit organization with legal recognition on June 20, 1984 by the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini (Decree No. 684). Although it has been operating under this form since the mid-1980s, its activities began much earlier, when around 1970 the Archivio Lucio Fontana was established.

From the earliest years, Teresita Rasini (president of the Foundation until 1995, the year of her death) initiated, together with a small group of professionals, a meticulous and detail-oriented archiving activity with the aim of protecting, valorizing, and promoting her husband’s work. This commitment has led over time to the recognition of a very large body of works now included in a constantly updated database and collected in the various editions of the catalogs raisonnés promoted and produced in collaboration with the foundation.

Holder of a nucleus of works by Fontana, but also by other artists, as well as a substantial library, documentary, and photographic archive, the foundation promotes and encourages studies and publications on the artist, as well as collaborating in the organization of exhibitions dedicated to him. This primary commitment has enabled the realization of projects in some of the most important public or private institutions, in Italy as well as abroad.

After more than 50 years of work, the commitment to safeguarding and promoting Fontana’s work remains constant.

Early on an Artistic Committee, alongside the Board of Directors, was established for the recognition and registration of works by the artist. The committee is also active today in determining the foundation’s cultural activities, as well as in producing content capable of triggering new readings and narratives of the master’s work.
