Little Theaters (1964-1966)

Characterized by “quinte”-type frames made of lacquered wood and in uniform colors, these works represent a hypothesis of spatial figuration where a single-color background, furrowed with holes, is presented as a kind of “sky” framed by a shaped frame. The early “Theaters” refer to abstract forms, although figurative references, particularly to trees, soon take over. The relationship between frame and canvas is also underscored by the color choices, which range from tone-on-tone to more pronounced dichromatism.
