"I Metalli - Metal Sheets (1961-1968)"
Works in this series make use of sheet metal with slits cut by hand, deep gashes and numerous scratches and incisions. The first "Metal Sheets" are associated with the city of New York in that they stem from ideas that Fontana developed while staying in the American city. In his "New York" metal sheets, the cuts and marks are more flowing, at times recalling skyscrapers next to each other. In the later works, the sheets are larger, the artist's actions more violent, the metal sheets clearly being attacked very decidedly.
